Softball Fields Type B Renovations

Softball Fields Type B Renovations

UPDATE December 2017

We have exciting news for Deer Park residents –especially softball families! Following a pre-construction meeting on December7, the Girls Softball Complex Renovation will officially begin within on Monday, January 8, 2018!

The project – a renovation of the current Youth Sports Complex that will result in a new, six-field softball complex – is a Type B sales tax-funded project being completed by Houston firm Halff Associates.

“We are proud to announce that construction of a dedicated Girls Softball Complex is now ready to begin at the current site of the Youth Sports Complex,” Parks and Recreation Director Charlie Sandberg said. “Throughout the project, which our contractor has estimated will take seven months to complete, the existing soccer and softball fields will be leveled and replaced with six new softball fields, as well as many other improved amenities.

“This project is one of seven Type B-funded projects overseen by the Community Development Corporation – the construction of a soccer complex, to be located at the intersection of East Street and Thirteenth Street, is another we will begin in 2018.”

Halff Associates will also complete the soccer complex, with construction slated to begin on January 8. Tandem Services is the General Contractor for both projects.

Girls Softball Complex amenities

Sandberg said the Girls Softball Complex Renovation project will result in more fields, an improved concession stand, updated restrooms, additional parking and much more.

“The current Youth Sports Complex has four softball fields, but when renovations are completed, the Girls Softball Complex will have six total fields - including four lighted fields - for our teams to use,” he said. “We hope the additional two fields will bring new tournaments to the Deer Park area.

“The complex will also include a batting cage that can accommodate up to four players at once, where the current batting cage can fit only two players.”

The complex will also feature a new concession stand, new restrooms, updated energy-efficient lighting, and more than twice the amount of parking available currently.

“With all the new amenities we are bringing in, we are more than doubling the capacity of the complex as a whole,” Sandberg said.

While much of the 18.8 acre complex will be unchanged in terms of landscape, the removal of two small groups of trees will be required. Sandberg said a total of 12 trees along and around X Street will be removed to allow for increased parking and the new concession stand.

The trees will be removed by City of Deer Park Parks and Recreation Department staff in advance of the construction.

“We’ve made every effort to keep as many trees possible on the complex as possible, and the majority will not be impacted by this renovation,” said Tiffany McGallian, Park Operations Coordinator. “After construction is complete, our department will evaluate planting new trees to replace the ones being removed.”
